Rebouças, Vanessa Tomaz; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Caldini, Nayara Nunes; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Cavalcante, Davi de Holanda; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Silva, Francisco Jackes Rodrigues da; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e; Universidade Federal do Ceará.
The objective of the present work was to determine the effects of the interaction between feeding rate and area for periphyton in rearing aquaria for Nile tilapia. Twenty 25 L polyethylene outdoor aquaria were used to hold experimental fish. Three tilapia fingerlings (2.56 ± 0.14 g) were stocked in each aquarium for five weeks (12 fish m-2). There were two different feeding rates (full and full minus 30%) and two submerged areas for periphyton development (59.4% and 96.5% of the aquarium surface area; n = 5). Final body weight, specific growth rate and yield in the 96.5%-area aquaria of fish submitted to 30% less feed were significantly higher than in the 96.5%-area aquaria submitted to full feeding rates. Fish growth in the restricted-feed aquaria was...

Paquotte, Philippe; Harache, Yves.
In a general context of low progression, European aquaculture has been characterized by the development of intensive fish farming. The most notable fact is the recent increase in intensive salmonid farming, with a turnover of almost two million ECU. More recently, the intensive farming of sea bass and sea bream has increased very rapidly in the Mediterranean Basin, although on a more reduced extent. Although research has started as soon as the seventies with a strong public incentive both for salmon, sea bass and sea bream, the development of these different types of aquaculture has not been done at the same pace. Some elements of sectorial dynamics are analysed such as research planning and financing, organization of the production and public policy. For...

Lab-scale periphyton-based system for fish culture Ciência Rural
Cavalcante,Davi de Holanda; Silva,Suzete Roberta da; Pinheiro,Paloma Damasceno; Martins,Ádila da Cunha; Sá,Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e.
The present research aimed to assess a lab-scale model to study periphyton-based systems for fish culture. Twenty-five liters plastic aquaria were stocked with three Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, juveniles (0.77±0.09g; 12 fish m-2) for 6 weeks in a 2x2 factorial design. Small plastic bottles were placed in some aquaria for periphyton development. Two feeding regimes were employed: "full-fed" (standard feeding rates were fully adopted) and "half-fed" (50% of standard feeding rates). Growth performance and limnological variables were observed in each aquarium. There werefive replicates per treatment. Fish have fed actively on periphyton, especially in the half-fed aquaria. The placement of periphyton bottles had no significant effects on the water...

Anthouard, M; Paris, J.
Movement activity and localization of food were studied dynamically with the objective of establishing the capacities of behavioral adaptation of the young Dicentrarchus labrax faced with a novel situation. The role played by previous rearing conditions was demonstrated, the level of stimulation being a sensitive intervening factor (currents associated with the food). The data show the favourable effects of such treatment, and are in agreement with work carried out on higher vertebrates, which have brought to light the importance of early stimulation in behavioral ontogeny which respect to emotionality as well as capacities of adaptation in subjects reaching adulthood.

Hattour, A..

Tarer, V.; Marques, A.; Raymond, J. Ch..

Liquid chromatographic determination of efficacy of incorporation of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole in brine shrimp (<i>Artemia</i> spp.) used for prophylactic chemotherapy of fish OMA
Nelis, H.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P.; De Leenheer, A.P..
The brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> , an excellent live food source in aquaculture, has been studied as a carrier to deliver selected chemotherapeutic agents to fish for prophylactic treatment of infectious diseases. To monitor the efficiency of incorporation of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole in <i><i>Artemia</i> franciscana</i>, a sensitive and specific analytical method was developed. It is based on homogenization of <i>Artemia</i> nauplii in methanol, extraction of lipids with hexane, solid-phase cleanup on C18 cartridges, and reversed-phase liquid chromatography with detection at 210 nm. The method is sensitive (detection limit, on the order of 3 µg/g with a sample quantity of 30 mg...

Live-food mediated drug delivery as a tool for disease treatment in larviculture: 2. A case study with European seabass OMA
Chair, M.; Romdhane, M.S.; Dehasque, M.; Nelis, H.; De Leenheer, A.P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of oral delivery of the antibiotics Trimethoprim (TMP) and Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) to marine fish larvae through incorporation of these antibiotics into the live food organism <i>Artemia</i>. SMX and TMP were selected for their wide range action against gram negative pathogenic bacteria and because of their limited solubility in seawater. Ormetoprim-Sulfadimethoxine (brand name Romet-30) is a new combination of a similar antimicrobial drug used in aquaculture. Diseased penaeid larvae fed Romet-30 through the food chain exhibited greater survival than the untreated ones. In an earlier study Verpraet have described a technique for bioencapsulating high doses of more than 500 mu g TMP +...

Low water quality in tropical fishponds in southeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
COSTA,SIMONE M.; APPEL,ELEONORA; MACEDO,CARLA F.; HUSZAR,VERA L.M..
Expansion of aquaculture around the world has heavily impacted the environment. Because fertilizers are needed to raise fish, one of the main impacts is eutrophication, which lowers water quality and increases the frequency of algal blooms, mostly cyanobacteria. To evaluate whether the water quality in 30 fishponds in southeastern Brazilian met the requirements of Brazilian legislation, we analyzed biotic and abiotic water conditions. We expected that the high nutrient levels due to fertilization would cause low water quality. We also analyzed cyanotoxins in seston and fish muscle in some systems where cyanobacteria were dominant. The fishponds ranged from eutrophic and hypereutrophic with high phytoplankton biomass. Although cyanobacteria were dominant in...

Martínez, R.A..

Marine cage fish farming ArchiMer
Espeut, P.; Harache, Yves; Lemarie, Gilles; Ricard, Jean-marc.
Marine capture fisheries in Jamaica is primarily artisanal in nature ansd is conducted maiinly by fishermen operating from canoes. Approximately 95% of these fishermen operate on the coastal shelf and its associated banks. The commercial species harvested comprise bottom-dwelling, coral reef species and free swimming species of finfish. Other fishery resources of commercial value include marine shrimp, conch and lobsters. Catch statistics are not available for all species, but the Department of Fisheries reports a slight decline in fishery production with production decreasing from 16 milion lbs in 1990, despite the fact that fishing efforts have doubled. Over this period the number of registered fishermen has grown from 12 000 to 16 000, al of whom are...

Maturation and spawning of tropical and subtropical marine finfish by environmental manipulations ArchiMer
Roberts Jr, D.
Circannual, diel, and lunal periodic mechanisms in naturally reproducing stocks of tropical and subtropical fishes are reviewed. Manipulations of biological clocks, used to control reproduction in captive broodstocks, are detailed. Experiments to induce controlled maturation and spawning in fishes either test efficacy of changing environmental conditions (regimes), or constant environmental conditions (controlled). Data have been generated in experimental/scientific studies, as well as applied research. Effects of controlled environmental regimes on serum steroids, gametogenesis, spawning, fry performance and egg quality are summarized for selected members of Centropomidae, Serranidae, and Sciaenidae.

Morphological development of the mouth and improvement in feeding ability in the early larval stages of red porgy, Pagrus pagrus (L.) OceanDocs
Aristizabal, E.O..
The appearance, ossification and growth of cartilaginous structures of the mouth in early larval stages of laboratory reared red porgy Pagrus pagrus, were examined. At the time of mouth opening, red porgy larvae are equipped with the fundamental components of the oral cavity to allow the sucking motion for acquiring food. During the initial feeding stage, from day 5 after hatching (AH) to day 7 AH, the hyoid and lower branchial archs were completed, and the head length and other structural elements, like the ceratohyal-epihyal cartilage, increased rapidly. These events intensified sucking mechanisms by increasing the amount of ingested rotifers. After day 13 AH, the presence of the bony premaxilla and angular, the ossification of the Meckels cartilage and...

(n-3) HUFA composition of freshly spawned eggs from European seabass (<i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>), seabream (<i>Sparus aurata</i>) and red seabream (<i>Pagrus major</i>) collected in different hatcheries OMA
Komis, A.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The biochemical composition of fish eggs is often used as an indicator for assessing the nutritional requirements of aquaculture species during their larval stages. Fatty acids of the (n-3) HUFA type have proven to play a critical role in providing good growth, survival and stress resistance in marine fish larvae. Hence, analyzing these fatty acids in fish eggs may provide interesting data on the requirements for those essential nutrients. By comparing the analyses of wild versus broodstock fish eggs differences may appear, possibly explaining differences in egg quality. Intra-spawning-season differences may further appear by following fatty acid profiles in the course of time. Finally, the influence of broodstock nutritionon egg composition may be another...
